Soldering iron tips are comprised of a copper core for good thermal conductiity, plated with iron which brings less corrosion. The soldering part of the tips is plated with solder. The other area is plated with chrome on order to prevent them from being wet with solder.
Soldering Tip Maintenance
Tinning the soldering tips:
The proper use and care of the doldering tip will increase soldering production and decrease solder joimt failure. Tinning your soldering tips is important to improve their life span. To ensure your tips are free of any oxides, you should clean them regularly. Always make sure to re-tin your tip directly after cleaning it to help provent oxidation.
Suggested Maintenance Produce:
1. Operate at the lowest possible temperature. Operating at temperatures execeeding 470℃ dramatically increases the formation of iron oxides, which results in accelerated tip failure.
2. Tip cleaning sponge is one of the most common cleaning methods. While you are soldering, you can wipe the tip across a sponge to wip off any excess solder, dirt, or oxides. Make sure to use only pure cellulose sponges.
3. Add rosin core solder of adequate diameter(0.8mm, or larger) to the working end of the tip regularly.
